The ResorT - Morzine:
At only approximately 50 miles from Geneva, Morzine is easily accessible for the British tourist and as such, its popularity has increased dramatically over the past few years and it is quickly becoming a solid favourite for both summer and winter holidays. The resort itself has excellent modern facilities but has retained the appearance, character and charm of a traditional Savoyard village with beautiful alpine chalets, wooden facades, sculpted balconies, and slate roofs.
The town has also maintained its lively youthful spirit and buzzes with excitement year-round. Socially it is one of the livelier resorts in France with plenty of excellent restaurants and bars. The most well-known après ski hangout is Robbo’s (selling super strength Mutzig lager) but there’s also a whole host of bars and nightclubs situated together just below the Pleney Cable car which offer varying levels of sophistication and ‘ambiance’.
Morzine is ideally located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area which spans across two countries and thirteen resorts with access to the largest mileage of slopes in the world (all 650km of them!).
The resort's early adoption of the then unheard-of craze of "snowboarding" has given the sport real momentum for today's visitors - and the facilities are simply staggering. In addition to the extensive pisted runs and off piste routes, there are snowparks throughout the Portes du Soleil including the Burton sponsored "Stash" and one of the best half pipes in France.
For beginners Morzine is ideal as there are several wide pistes with gentle gradients close to the centre of resort. There’s also such a vast expanse of skiing available that experts just can’t get bored! Straddling the Franco-Swiss border, the lift systems are well planned allowing for long and varied runs with minimal time spent on lifts.
The British Ski Club says: ‘For our money, Morzine is the best base from which to explore the enormous Portes du Soleil area. It combines the bustle of a busy, vibrant town with some of the finest skiing in Europe, and as such is hugely popular with British skiers. Even better, it is extremely picturesque, thanks to a lovely location along the dramatic River Dranse….’
If you’re not so keen on skiing or boarding, there are a loads of other activities to keep you entertained. There’s the standard winter resort activities such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing and tobogganing plus plenty of Alpine shops selling local produce (from tasty Savoyard cheeses to French saucisson and beautiful locally brewed Genepi). If you get bored of all this, Morzine boasts a world-class ice rink, a large swimming pool AND ice-diving beneath a lake OR nature discovery tours.
During the summer months, the pistes become trails for hiking and mountain biking, boasting up to 380kms of marked trails with varying degrees of technical skill required. Morzine has been proud to be a venue for the Tour de France and host to Mountain biking championships. Just a few of the other options on offer include: paragliding, golfing, fishing, canyoning and tennis.
Nearest airport: Geneva, 75 minutes (84km).
Nearest train station: Cluses or Thonon-Les-Bains, both 30 minutes (30 km). Regular bus services from the stations.
